Whether that’s from lawyers who have joined a larger firm, or whether it’s someone taking a promotion. It’s often a newly-qualified lawyer, now with much larger expectations than before, or often from people stepping up into Associate, Senior Associate or Partner level roles.
It’s not a term I’d heard much before a couple of years ago, but it’s always been there. I had this feeling a few years ago, when taking on increased responsibility… but the thing is, it often sticks and doesn’t go away. It can last years, right?!
“Am I good enough”,
“How did I get here?”
“Do people believe in me?”
“Why me?”
“Can I do this?”
“Am I really ready for this?”
If you’re feeling like this, then I promise you… you’re not alone… in fact, you’re probably in the majority.
Imposter syndrome is widespread in the legal profession. Whether you’re a newly qualified solicitor or a seasoned barrister, it’s that nagging doubt questioning your abilities.
In a recent survey by the Law Society, 50% of UK lawyers admitted to experiencing imposter syndrome at some point in their careers. This can lead to stress, burnout, and even impact your professional growth.
Here are some practical tips to combat those feelings:
- Be aware of the feelings (and know that lots of other people are feeling the same way… it’s completely normal)
- Talk about it to someone you trust
- Celebrate small (and big) wins… you deserve to!
- Understand your strengths and weaknesses
- Accept that perfection isn’t possible
Remember, your skills and experiences got you here. Someone else will have believed in you… and possibly lots of others will have too… and still do! Trust in your journey.
